  5. TAIWAN, MAINLAND EXPERTS MEET ON SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

  7. Taipei, July 28 (CNA) "Sustainable development," a subject which has
  8. received equal attention in both Taiwan and mainland China, can be a
  9. direction for the two sides to work toward in the quest for peaceful
  10. reunification, a mainland Chinese expert said here on Monday.

  12. Zhang Jiayuan, vice director of mainland China's 21st Century Agenda
  13. Management Center, said Taiwan and mainland China have both accumulated
  14. strong capabilities in certain areas in the fields of science and academia.
  15. Mainland China holds leading positions in the fields of oceanography,
  16. seismology and meteorology, while Taiwan has the competitive edge in
  17. application technologies and marketing strategies, he noted.

  19. Through effective interaction, the two sides can learn from each other,
  20. paving the way for a smooth process of sustained development, Zhang added. 
  21. Chang Lung-sheng, a commissioner of the Council for Economic Planning and
  22. Development and chairman of the ROC Sustained Development Association, said
  23. at a keynote speech during the opening session of a cross-strait seminar,
  24. that sustained development is a mutual goal sought by both sides of the
  25. Taiwan Strait.

  27. He called for the two sides to pool their wisdom and energy for concerted
  28. efforts on environmental protection and natural resources and wildlife
  29. conservation, so that neither side will repeat the errors made by the
  30. industrially advanced countries during their marches to development.

  32. The Cross-Strait Sustained Development Seminar, sponsored by the Energy and
  33. Resources Laboratories under the Industrial Technology Research Institute
  34. and the first of its kind, kicked off Monday at Taipei's Howard Plaza Hotel
  35. with the participation of 18 specialists from the mainland and a larger
  36. number of experts from Taiwan. It will run until Tuesday.

  38. The experts will primarily discuss issues concerning the environment,
  39. economic and social development with the aim of raising Taiwan's and the
  40. mainland's industrial competitiveness in the

  55. Salmonella outbreak kills six in Mexico

  57. MEXICO CITY (Reuters) - Six people died and dozens
  58. more were seriously ill from a salmonella outbreak
  59. blamed on bad chicken in a small town in central
  60. Mexico, a television report said Monday.
  61.  
  62. Two of the six dead were children and 54 people
  63. were ill, the Televisa network's ``24 Hours'' news
  64. program said.
  65.  
  66. Health officials quarantined the town of San Pablo
  67. Zoquitlan in central Puebla state just east of
  68. Mexico City, the government news agency Notimex
  69. said. Notimex reported 97 people sick.

  71. Televisa showed video of dozens of sick people
  72. crammed into one small room with only four beds.
  73. Most of the sick appeared to be children or
  74. elderly.

  76. A special brigade of 38 health workers was
  77. dispatched to a neighboring town in Puebla state to
  78. deal with the outbreak, Notimex reported.
  79.  
  80. Notimex said authorities attributed the salmonella
  81. to chicken that was not properly cooked or a
  82. popular chicken dish that likely was prepared with
  83. water that had not been properly boiled.
